Comeback in Cup Crowns Gala Champions
By Rachel Rutherford
The final of the U16’s Borders Cup took place on January 11 at Tweedbank astro-pitch. After winning 4-0 against Jedburgh Grammar School the previous week, Galashiels Academy’s Under 16 hockey side would be coming up against Earlston High School. The match started at 4.30pm on the Monday and Galashiels went out with steely determination to win the gold medal.
Both teams were playing a strong game but it was Gala who were first to make an impact on the score-line, a goal coming from Emily Ballantyne. Earlston, however, returned with a further two goals to take the lead before the half-time whistle blew. The girls went into the second half looking confident despite being down by one and both Holly Shepherd and Hannah McNair of Galashiels Academy scored to bring the final score to 3-2 in Gala’s favour. After receiving their well-deserved trophy and gold medals the team will be competing in the Scottish Cup. Well done to all the girls on their fantastic achievement!
