The Education Maintenance Allowance is a weekly payment worth up to £30 for students who are aged 16 and are planning to continue in post-compulsory education. There are also two bonuses of £150 is they remain on the course and make good progress with their learning. Payments are made directly into a bank account.

Students can get an EMA if: -

  • They have reached the school leaving date.
  • The household income is £30,000 or below.
  • They are on non-advanced further education in fifth year at school.

(EMAs will be available in 2004/05 to 16 year olds, 16 and 17 year old in 2005/06, 16 – 18 year olds in 2006/07.)

Students must attend all their course sessions and sign an EMA Learning Agreement with the school. This agreement will set out what is expected of them in terms of: -

  • Attendance
  • Coursework
  • Progress
